Monday Okpebholo, the governor of Edo State, revealed that within the course of a year, the 18 local governments wasted more than N83 billion from the federal account.

According to him, last month the Federal Government gave the 18 councils monthly allocations totalling more than N8 billion. According to the governor, the councils received over N6.5 billion per month in allocations from the Office of the State’s Accountant-General between January and September of last year, while the local governments collected over N8 billion per month from the federation account between October and December.

According to All Progressives Congress (APC) member Okpebholo, the 18 PDP-affiliated local government chairmen collectively received nearly N83 billion in monthly allocations over the course of a year.

Speaking at the Government House in Benin to the Acting Chairman of Akoko-Edo Local Government, Alabi Oshionogue, and the council members, who were paying him a courtesy call, the governor said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had done a lot to support grassroots development but bemoaned the fact that the politicians chosen to deliver services had wasted the funds.

The 14 elected All Progressives Congress (APC) members of Edo’s 7th House of Assembly, known as G-14, were met by Governor Okpebholo yesterday at Government House, Benin. Former Governor Godwin Obaseki refused to formally inaugurate them.

He underlined the value of parliamentary participation in a democracy and recognised the G-14’s commitment to and allegiance to the APC.
