A 25 year old labourer, Ibrahim Oseni, has been arrested for allegedly killing his 18 year old cousin, Hassan Suleiman, in Edo State following a dispute said to have originated in Katsina State.
The incident reportedly occurred on February 19, 2026, at Evbuoarue Community in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of the state.
Sources indicated that both men, who are from Katsina State, had an unresolved disagreement in their hometown in 2025 before relocating to Benin City for menial jobs.
The Deputy Commander of the Edo State Security Corps in charge of Operations, Richard Balogun, confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect had been handed over to the Ugo Divisional Police Headquarters along with exhibits recovered for further investigation and prosecution.
Balogun said the suspect was apprehended by operatives of the Evbuoarue Unit of the Igbae Sector Command following a distress report of a murder in a bush within the community.
According to him, the suspect allegedly carried out the act in retaliation over a quarrel he had with the deceased in Katsina State in late 2025.
“They both resolved the issue and came to Benin city together for normal daily commercial activities, but unknown to the deceased, his cousin did not let the matter go.
“While at the Evbuoarue community, the village where they both do menial jobs, the suspect asked the deceased to take him to a farm road with his motorcycle to get some herbs for his stomach upset.
“The deceased who never knew that would be his last on earth embarked on the journey. On getting to the farm road, the suspect immediately brought out a cutlass and cut off his head.
“He immediately collected his mobile phone, the sum of N36, 000 cash and then escaped to an unknown destination while the deceased was declared missing by his associates in Evbuoarue”, he said.
Balogun further alleged that part of the N36,000 was transferred by the suspect to his family in Katsina.
He added that the cutlass allegedly used in the crime was recovered from under the suspect’s sleeping mat, while the deceased’s mobile phone was also retrieved from where it had been hidden.
The suspect was said to have informed members of the community about the death and led them to the scene, raising suspicion over how he knew the location. The matter was subsequently reported to the Edo State Security Corps, leading to his arrest.
The case has been transferred to the police for further investigation.
