A former Edo State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Paddy Iyamu, has officially declared his intention to contest for the Oredo Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Iyamu made the announcement on Friday at the Oredo Local Government Area secretariat of the party, where he was received by supporters and party members in a show of solidarity.
The declaration attracted a large turnout of party faithful and stakeholders, reflecting his longstanding involvement in the party’s structure within Oredo.
Speaking at the event, Iyamu rejected claims that he lacks grassroots support, insisting that his contributions to the party over the years demonstrate his strong connection with the people.
He noted that his involvement in APC activities dates back to 2016, adding that he has consistently committed his time and resources to support the party and its candidates.
“I have been in this party since 2016, supporting it with all I have. Those who know Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu can attest to my commitment in building the party and supporting our candidates,” he said.
Iyamu also highlighted his participation in past elections, including his support for Governor Monday Okpebholo, stating that he actively mobilised voters across Oredo to ensure electoral success.
“In 2020 and 2024, I did the same thing. I went round the nook and crannies of Oredo campaigning. I supported youth leaders financially to galvanise support and ensure we secured victory for our candidates,” he added.
He further pointed to his empowerment programmes for women and youths as evidence of his grassroots engagement, noting that such initiatives have been ongoing since 2019, including monthly support schemes in Ward 10.
“From 2019, I started women empowerment in Oredo, supporting businesses and families. In Ward 10, we introduced monthly empowerment programmes, and today, the results are visible. I make bold to say that I have the numbers and I won overwhelmingly,” he stated.
Responding to criticisms from some quarters, Iyamu described claims of being rejected at the ward level as unfounded and politically motivated, maintaining that his record speaks for itself.
“It is painful when people try to paint me as a stranger. The same people know the role I played. My only ‘crime’ is my decision to contest,” he said, adding that his relationship with party leadership remains cordial.
Earlier, the APC Chairman in Oredo, Dr. Osamudiamen Osarenkhoe, urged party members to remain united, describing Iyamu as a loyal member who respects party leadership and due process.
“Paddy is a man who respects the party and its leaders. Power belongs to God. If it is his turn, no one can stop it. We must stop backbiting and work together to build a stronger party,” he said.
Notable figures present at the event included former Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Uyi Igbe; former House of Representatives member, Patrick Obahiagbon; Valentine Asuen; APC State Secretary, Lawrence Okah; and members of the City Boy Movement, among others.
