The Nigerian Association of Women Journalists in Edo State has urged individuals, corporate organisations and government institutions to prioritise the care and welfare of elderly citizens.

The Chairperson of the association in the state, Habiba Sam, made the appeal during a visit to the Catholic Home of the Elderly located at St. Paul’s Catholic Church along Airport Road in Benin City.

The visit was part of activities organised by the association to mark the 2026 edition of International Women’s Day, during which members presented food items and toiletries to residents of the home.

This year’s celebration by the association was held under the theme “Give to Gain.”

Speaking during the visit, Sam said the gesture was intended to demonstrate love and compassion toward elderly members of society, particularly those living in care facilities.

“We are pleased to be in your presence to mark this year’s celebration with you, knowing that you are in your twilight years when you may not often receive visitors. We hope our visit brings hope and fond memories, gladdens your hearts and makes this day remarkable for us all,” she said.

Responding on behalf of the Directress of the home, Gloria Ochei, the caregiver, Rose John, expressed appreciation to the association for the visit and the items donated to residents.

She appealed to the journalists to use their professional platforms to create awareness about the existence of the facility and the needs of the elderly people living there.

“I plead with you to help us spread the message that there is a home like this where elderly people are being cared for. The Archbishop of Benin currently sponsors their welfare, including medical care, but we still appeal to well-meaning Nigerians to support the home,” she said.

She also thanked the association for selecting the facility as part of its International Women’s Day activities and prayed for blessings upon the members.

During the visit, the oldest resident of the home, Comfort Solomon, aged 111, offered prayers and blessings for the journalists in appreciation of their visit and support.

The items donated, including foodstuffs and toiletries, are expected to provide additional comfort and support for residents of the home.
