The Edo State Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has cautioned taxpayers to file their annual tax returns before the March 31, 2026 deadline or face penalties in accordance with existing tax laws.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Executive Chairman, John Osirenimhe Odior, emphasised that filing annual tax returns is a mandatory obligation for all eligible individuals and business operators in the state.

The agency explained that the requirement applies to employees, entrepreneurs, professionals, and participants in the informal sector, including online traders and artisans, stressing that failure to comply amounts to a violation of statutory provisions.

It referenced relevant legal frameworks, including Section 24(f) of the 1999 Constitution and Section 13 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, noting that failure to file returns or submission of inaccurate or incomplete information would attract administrative sanctions.

The IRS also stated that tax returns must be submitted electronically, with taxpayers expected to provide details of their income, tax calculations, and supporting documents such as proof of payment and taxpayer identification.

The agency reiterated that enforcement actions would be taken against defaulters, urging taxpayers to comply promptly to avoid penalties and possible legal consequences.
