The Edo State Government has directed all political appointees, public servants and government officials intending to contest elective positions in the forthcoming general elections to resign from their posts with immediate effect.
The directive was conveyed in a statement issued in Benin City by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Umar Musa Ikhilor. The communication was dated February 28, 2026.
According to the statement, affected appointees are required to submit their resignation letters on or before March 1, 2026, ahead of participating in any party primaries or electoral processes. The government explained that the instruction is in strict adherence to the provisions of the Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026.
The Secretary to the State Government noted that the move is intended to prevent potential disqualification of aspirants by relevant electoral bodies. He added that the measure seeks to uphold fairness, transparency and equal opportunity for all candidates, while maintaining the neutrality and integrity of public institutions.
He further reminded public office holders that governance responsibilities must not be undermined by partisan political activities.
“All affected officers are therefore advised to take immediate and necessary steps to comply with this directive within the stipulated timeline.
“The Senator Monday Okpebholo-led Administration remains firmly committed to upholding constitutionalism, respecting the rule of law, and ensuring that due process is strictly observed in all matters of governance and political participation.
“By this announcement, all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies are directed to give this notice the widest possible circulation,” he said.
