The Edo State Government has raised concerns over a suspected plan by certain individuals and groups to incite unrest in Okpella community following a recent court ruling on a traditional leadership dispute.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commissioner for Public Safety and Security, Rt. Hon. Festus Ebea, said the government had received credible intelligence indicating that some elements are allegedly plotting to disrupt peace in the area despite earlier warnings.
The government warned that such actions could lead to avoidable violence and stressed its resolve to prevent any attempt to undermine the judicial process or constituted authority.
Ebea cautioned that no individual or group has the authority to enforce a court ruling independently, especially as the matter remains under appeal, emphasising the need to uphold the rule of law.
He disclosed that security agencies have been placed on high alert, with personnel already deployed to monitor the situation and maintain order in the community.
The commissioner added that acts such as self-help, forceful takeover, intimidation, harassment, or interference with traditional institutions are unlawful and will be met with swift action.
He, however, appealed to residents, community leaders, and other stakeholders in Okpella to remain calm, show restraint, and allow the legal process to proceed without interference.
