The Coalition of Edo State Civil Society has stated that its investigation into last Tuesday’s incident in Benin City found no evidence that former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, or a National Leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) escaped an assassination attempt in Edo State.
The clarification follows unrest that occurred shortly after Olumide Akpata joined the ADC at the party’s Edo State secretariat. The situation escalated when suspected thugs reportedly invaded the secretariat and disrupted activities. The same group was also said to have moved to the GRA residence of Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, where vehicles parked outside were allegedly attacked.
However, the Coalition said it engaged members of the Edo ADC, eyewitnesses and security operatives stationed at Oyegun’s residence as part of its independent inquiry.
In a statement issued in Benin City and signed by the Convener, Braimoh Idris, and Co-convener, Andrew Akhere, the group rejected claims that Obi was shot at or escaped an assassination attempt. It described the narrative as misleading and aimed at generating public sympathy.
The statement maintained that neither Oyegun nor Obi was shot at during the incident.
According to the Coalition:
“The event at the ADC secretariat which was attended by top leaders of the party has been concluded and all dignitaries including journalists have left the venue before the so-called thugs stormed the venue.
“No gunshot was fired at the ADC secretariat.
“Chief Oyegun and Peter Obi were inside the fortified residence of Oyegun when the thugs arrived. The witnesses said stones were hurled at the vehicles parked outside Oyegun’s residence and not gunshot.
“If Oyegun and Peter Obi were targets of assassination, why were there vehicles not affected?
“Oyegun and Obi have security escorts, how many bullets did they expended to repel the attackers.
“Our investigation showed that the ADC instigated the attacks to gain public sympathy. We want peace in Edo State. Political parties should play by the rules and not create crisis where there are none.”
