According to former president Olusegun Obasanjo, corruption will abound in a society that does not believe in the repercussions of bad behaviour.

He emphasised that the absence of free and fair elections resulted in corruption at the highest levels of government.

Speaking at a youth debate on the sidelines of the presidential youth forum, Obasanjo revealed that while corruption exists in many nations, in some, it is not a way of life.

He criticised Nigeria’s previous administration for allegedly managing the power sector poorly, saying that issues persisted even after he was elected president in 1999 and was departing in 2007.

Youths must be positively instructive in order to become emerging leaders and alter the narratives, he said, adding that people in charge will not want to leave but that change is coming.

He reiterated that Western liberal democracy is inappropriate for the nation, pointing out that it is the cause of the lack of discernible progress.

He went on to say that among the qualities one should seek in a leader are honesty, empathy, and a fear of God.
