The Edo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting inclusion and eliminating stigma against persons living with autism as it joined the global community to mark World Autism Awareness Day 2026 on Thursday.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, the government highlighted the importance of increased awareness, understanding, and protection of the rights of individuals on the autism spectrum, describing autism as a lifelong developmental condition that affects communication, social interaction, and perception.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Eugenia Abdallah, emphasised that individuals living with autism deserve dignity, equal opportunities, and adequate support to live meaningful lives.

She called for a more inclusive society where persons with autism are accepted and empowered, urging families, educators, caregivers, and the general public to show patience, compassion, and understanding.

Abdallah also commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for his continued focus on the welfare and protection of vulnerable groups in the state.

She further praised Edesili Okpebholo Anani for her advocacy and initiatives aimed at improving the lives of women, children, and persons with special needs.

Reaffirming the ministry’s commitment, the commissioner said efforts would be intensified to encourage early diagnosis, expand access to quality education and healthcare, and promote greater social inclusion for persons with autism.

She urged stakeholders across different sectors to increase awareness campaigns, tackle discrimination, and create supportive environments that enable individuals with autism to thrive and contribute to society.

The ministry also encouraged residents of Edo State to embrace diversity and support initiatives aimed at building a more inclusive and compassionate society, noting that every individual has unique strengths and contributions regardless of their condition.
