Operatives of the Edo State Security Corps (ESSC) have apprehended a man identified as James for allegedly stealing lightning arrestors from homes in Edo State.

The suspect, along with accomplices who are still at large, reportedly moved between houses in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area, targeting the devices.

A lightning arrestor is an essential safety device designed to protect electrical installations by channeling high-voltage strikes safely into the ground.

According to reports, the syndicate often struck houses where occupants were traveling or away on Sunday mornings.

The suspect was caught when he attempted to steal from a residence while the owner was attending church. ESSC operatives on routine patrol spotted him acting suspiciously.

A source familiar with the case said that upon questioning, it was discovered that James had already dismantled and stolen the device from the compound. He allegedly admitted that he usually transports the stolen items to Benin City, where buyers wait to purchase them.

In an interview, the suspect claimed that he stole the devices to raise money to care for his wife.

ESSC Deputy Commander Richard Balogun confirmed the arrest, noting that the suspect had confessed to the crime. He added that James has been handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.
