Iyamho (Edo): The Edo State Government has increased the monthly subvention to Edo University, Iyamho, in Etsako West Local Government Area, from N100 million to N250 million as part of efforts to strengthen academic standards.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Victor Adetimirin, announced the development during the institution’s 7th convocation ceremony held in Iyamho on Saturday.
He explained that upon assuming office, the university council proposed an upward review of the monthly allocation from N100 million to N250 million, adding that the request was approved and implemented by October.
According to him, the increased funding has boosted staff morale and improved students’ academic performance.
Adetimirin also disclosed that 850 students graduated during the ceremony, comprising 693 undergraduate and 157 postgraduate students.
He noted that the convocation not only marked the completion of academic programmes but also reinforced the institution’s vision of becoming globally competitive with a focus on service, impact, and excellence.
Congratulating the graduates, he encouraged them to uphold the values instilled during their time at the university.

In his address, the Visitor to the university, Governor Monday Okpebhole, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming the institution into a world-class university.
Okpebhole, represented by his Special Adviser on Policy and Strategy, Prof. Philip Afaha, assured that the government would continue to prioritise quality education in line with its SHINE agenda.
He also pledged sustained support through increased funding and interventions aimed at enhancing performance and infrastructure.
“I assure you that we will continue to increase our subvention and interventions and upgrade this university to world-class status.
“Edo State is becoming an education hub for academic excellence,” he said.
He added, “We have two state universities, one of which is Edo University, Iyamho.
“The goal is to provide opportunities for self-development to our teeming population within the state,”he said.
