Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have arrested a 28-year-old suspect, Muhammed Abubakar, over an alleged kidnapping attempt in Edo State.
The suspect, said to be from Kwara State, was apprehended in a community near Ologbo in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, said the arrest followed a failed attempt by the suspect and his accomplices to abduct occupants of a residence in the area.
According to her, the suspect has been transferred to the Anti-Kidnapping and Cybercrime Unit of the command for further investigation and prosecution.
She explained that the suspect and his accomplices, reportedly armed, stormed the house at about 6 a.m., firing gunshots to intimidate residents while attempting to force entry into the building.
The situation, however, changed after residents raised an alarm, prompting a swift response from security operatives who moved to the scene.
“On sighting the police, the suspects fled into the bush, but Muhammed was arrested during a search operation, while others escaped,” she said.
Ikoedem added that the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has directed divisional and tactical commanders to remain vigilant in tackling criminal activities across the state.
The suspect reportedly admitted involvement in the crime during interrogation, stating that he is a herder from Kwara State but had come into Edo State for kidnapping activities.
