The Edo State Ministry of Education has condemned the assault on a student of Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City by two fellow students.
The incident came to public attention after a disturbing video circulated on social media showing two students taking turns to attack another student who was lying on the floor.
In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Edith Ebomoyi, the government described the act as unacceptable and contrary to the values of discipline, respect and safety expected in schools across Edo State.
“The Edo State Ministry of Education has received with deep concern the disturbing video currently circulating on social media showing a student physically assaulting another student at Igbinedion Education Centre, Benin City.
“The Ministry strongly condemns this act of violence in the strongest possible terms. Such behaviour is completely unacceptable and runs contrary to the values of discipline, respect and safety which all educational institutions in Edo State are expected to uphold. The safety and well-being of every child in our schools remains a top priority of the Edo State Government,” the statement said.
Following the incident, the ministry announced the immediate constitution of a five-member investigative committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the case.
According to the statement, the committee has been tasked with urgently investigating the matter and identifying students found culpable.
“Appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken against anyone found responsible in accordance with the rules and regulations guiding conduct in schools within Edo State. The Ministry will not tolerate acts of bullying, violence or any form of misconduct that threatens the safety of students,” the statement added.
The ministry also assured parents, school administrators and the public that the government would ensure justice is served and that necessary steps would be taken to prevent similar incidents in schools across the state.
It further urged school authorities to strengthen guidance, discipline and monitoring of students in order to maintain a safe and conducive learning environment.
Meanwhile, the management of the school has expelled the two students alleged to have carried out the assault after the video sparked widespread public reaction.
