The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 35-year-old medical doctor for alleged unlawful possession of a prohibited firearm during an intelligence-driven operation in the state.

The suspect, identified as Kingsley Dele, was apprehended on February 28, 2026, at about 10:00 a.m. by operatives of the Command Intelligence and Rapid Response Squad (CIRRS) following credible intelligence.

Police said the suspect, a resident of Obaretin Community in Edo State, was arrested during a swift and discreet operation which led to the recovery of a Beretta pistol.

Confirming the development, the police said the arrest forms part of ongoing efforts by the command to curb the circulation of illegal arms and violent crimes across communities.

“The arrest forms part of the sustained and strategic offensive being championed by the Commissioner of Police against the circulation of illicit weapons which often fuel violent crimes across communities,” the command said.

“The Command views the illegal possession of firearms, regardless of status or profession of those involved, as a grave threat to public peace and will continue to respond with firmness and precision.”

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Monday Agbonika, has directed that the investigation be intensified as security operatives expand efforts to identify and apprehend possible accomplices connected to the case.

Police authorities stated that the suspect will be charged to court after the completion of investigations.

The command further reassured residents of its continued commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.

“The Command remains vigilant, proactive and unrelenting in its mandate to safeguard lives and property,” the police said while urging members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement by providing timely and credible information.
